Online School for Preschoolers

Online School for Preschoolers

With everything that's been going lately, most of our kids had to transition to online learning. While is hasn't been easy for the students, it seems like it is even more challenging for the parents.

My daughter is 4 years old and was attending preschool full time before the quarantine. Once the school closed though, her preschool switched to online learning. With kids that young, their attention span is really short. So it's been really difficult to get her to sit in front of a computer and pay attention, even if its just for short periods of time.

We still have summer ahead of us - with virtual camps and online activities, I thought I'd share a few tips that helped me and my daughter get through online schooling.

How to Keep Your Small Child Engaged in Online Schooling:

1. Do It Together

My initial expectation when my daughter started online school was that she would be occupied for some time while I can quickly catch up on some house work, do the dishes, or fold laundry. I was very naive. She simply didn't listen or tried to run away every few minutes. So I started sitting next to her or even putting her only lap. I noticed when I stay engaged and excited about what her teacher is doing, she is more likely to follow suit.

2. Keep Their Hands Occupied

Kids are not built to sit still, even if its just for a 30 minutes school session. So we need to give them something to do while they are in from of the computer. I usually let her cut shapes with scissors, do some coloring, or play with playdoh. Even though, this will take part of her attention away from the teacher - but at least she'll stay in one spot and still retain some of the information.

3. Remove All Distractions

This is a BIG one. If you have other kids, try to have your spouse take them outside or keep them engaged and quiet in another room. As far as possible. Remove all the toys or anything that can distract your child. I like doing online school with her at the kitchen table. where there are no toys in sight.

I know this is tough. But you are not alone - many moms out there are going through the same stress and challenges. We will get through this! In the mean, I really hope my tips will make your mom life a little bit better.
